As I was making my oatmeal just now, I glanced at the wall calendar. Still February?!
Oh right, leap year, I remembered. February 29. What a rare bird.
Then I started thinking about rare birds. And how every one of us is a rare bird. And also how much I love the ordinary little birds, the song sparrows, the chickadees, the fat robins and squawky jays, and even the plodding pigeons vying for bagel crumbs by a park bench. Each has its own voice, patterns of flight, ways of caring for its young, favorite foods, and special markings.
